En Bateria
NORA Studio

In Sa Pobla, you will find this single-family house, built on an elongated plot between party walls.

Both the ground floor and the first floor of the house share a simple operational layout.

Each level features a main longitudinal bay that spans from the street to the courtyard, offering an open flow. This is complemented by a second, smaller bay that is more compartmentalized, housing distinct rooms that serve various functions within the house.

A second bay acts as the 'battery' that powers the house, providing all necessary functionalities and enriching the main bay with 'the luxury of emptiness'.

This void now serves as a versatile space that can flexibly accommodate both public activities, connecting with the street, and private ones, opening onto the courtyard. It also expands the sleeping areas to the extent that the traditional concept of a bedroom is blurred on the first floor.

This 'battery' scheme extends even throughout the facade, where the elevation unveils its secrets through distinct materiality.

On the south side, where the courtyard is located, a gallery shields the building.

During summer it functions as a chimney to protect from direct sunlight and expel excess heat. During winter, it maximizes heat absorption, creating a thermal buffer that releases warmth gradually as needed for the home.

To further advance this energy-efficient approach, the decision was made to utilize materials with high thermal inertia and low environmental impact, such as ceramics.

These will serve both as structural elements and as finishing layers in most rooms. Additionally, opting to prominently feature thermoclay blocks necessitated meticulous dimension and modulation studies to prevent visible seams, as this material does not accommodate partial cuts well.

At the same time, wood is introduced on the upper floor, enhancing the sense of warmth during winter.

Concrete is the final material incorporated into the project.

Its use in floors and slabs offers an aesthetic contrast, balancing the overall color scheme. It reinforces the structural integrity of the project and provides durability, crucial for long-term sustainability.

The house comprises two floors and includes a large patio with a garden and pool.
