Les Jardins - Appartement Camas
Thibaut Rassat

This renovation project is situated in the Camas neighborhood of Marseille, connecting Place Jean Jaurès and Blancarde train station. The apartment consists of interconnected rooms, with a long corridor illuminated by borrowed light leading to a blue kitchen.

The kitchen originally served as a reception room and was situated far from the living room. A key challenge of the project was relocating this room closer to the living area. By moving the kitchen into the former dark room, long mirrors were strategically designed to expand the space and reflect the surroundings.

The structural interventions, though minor, are essential to enhance fluidity and brightness: relocating and removing doors to invite light and warmth into the rear of this single-oriented dwelling, and creating new vistas throughout the apartment. A curved wall enhances light, movement, and visibility.

The layout is meticulously planned to enhance order and clarity. The removal of the corridor fosters symmetry, focusing attention on a prominent faded blue piece of furniture that serves as the project's focal point. Originating from the partition of the flat's former 'dark room', it organizes, rhythms, conceals, and then reveals various uses within the space. This element adds to the poetic ambiance of the place, transforming into a visual centerpiece of daily life.

Linoeum was chosen for the living areas, bringing brightness and domesticity. Two symmetrical bookcases provide organization and contribute to the tranquil atmosphere. The colors used throughout the apartment mirror those found on the streets of Marseille—shades of blue-grey, terracotta, and sun-washed hues.

During the renovations, various plastering techniques and layers were uncovered, revealing glimpses of the site's history. In the living room, a painted frame exposes a cement coating, alongside corrections and notes made by masons decades ago. Each room retains traces of the site's memory: weathered doors, walls plastered by the original masons, and floor tiles discovered beneath layers of tile and cement.

The bedroom door has been relocated to achieve full transparency between the bedroom window, its doorway, and the bathroom. This arrangement benefits from direct light in the evenings, enhancing the spatial depth and enlarging the overall space. Fixed windows above the doors further enhance the luminosity throughout.

In the bedroom, a long desk has been crafted on each side of the old chimney flues, harmonizing with the composition of the bookshelves in the living room and enhancing the overall design of the space. All elements were custom-built on site for the project, including the transoms, cupboards, and door handles, crafted by skilled artisans to complement the serene atmosphere of the place.
