PNYX was the Architectural Association’s free paper from 2014–2019, co-founded and co-edited by Adolfo Del Valle and Oskar Johanson. It featured artists, teachers, poets, bankers, activists, researchers, councillors, architects and students, each of whom articulated a position through writing, if not drawing. The editors attended summits and biennales, and exhibited issues of the paper at Harvard GSD and at the Arkitekturmusuem in Munich. From its outset, the paper chose to directly examine work that explored issues of the city and designers’ responsibilities to and for it. Issue #17 covered the role of the architect as an advocate for design as public good. #28, published on the verge of the Brexit referendum, traced the forces that had eroded public trust in institutions. #37 featured a manifesto in solidarity with striking university lecturers, while #52 examined the role of corruption and loopholes in shaping the public realm. Architecture’s role in meeting and adapting to catastrophic climate change was a consistent theme: #59 featured field reporting on climate protests, #64 charted the relationship between interior climates and the Earth system, while #71 detailed an ambitious plan to facilitate deep adaptation. As a short, weekly publication, PNYX strove to be topical. But throughout its course the paper also maintained an anticipatory focus — on the challenges of design and justice, the city and the climate. Above all, it sought to be a champion of the voices of students and young practitioners, to whom responsibility to meet these challenges is already falling.
